What Our Music Ministry Offers

Oakmont’s Music Ministry allows persons of all ages to invest their gifts and talents with a wide variety of musical styles. Being a part of the Music Ministry offers people a way to learn more about their faith; provides opportunities to improve their musical talents; gives a chance to be involved in outreach in the community; helps to provide effective times of worship; and offers an avenue of fellowship with other musicians in our church family!

You are welcome at any time to become a part of the Music Ministry of Oakmont Baptist Church. Many of the musical groups coincide with the school year but some do not. When you take a closer look, you’ll discover various musical groups for all ages including Choirs, Vocal Ensembles, Handbell Ensembles, Praise Teams, Instrumental Ensembles, and other individual opportunities. All skill levels are welcome to come and be a part of these groups!

Vocal Groups

Chancel Choir

Rehearsals: Wednesdays • 7:15-8:30 p.m.

This choir is for all adults, college-age and up. No auditions are required. Rehearsals are every Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Currently, this choir prepares music for and leads worship in at the 9:40 Worship Service. This group also prepares music for several major productions at various times throughout the year. Ministry opportunities have included a music tour to Vermont and several nearby retirement facilities.

Emerge Musicians

Rehearsals: Wednesdays • 7:30-8:30 p.m.

The Emerge Worship Experience at 11 a.m. features an outstanding team of instrumentalists and vocalists. Rehearsals occur on Wednesday nights, 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. A different vocal team is used every Sunday morning usually consisting of two men and two women, along with a lead singer. The instrumentalists have included keyboard, piano, various guitars (both electric and acoustic), bass, mandolin, violin, and flute. The group welcomes new singers and instrumentalists.

JOY Singers' Choir

Rehearsals: Wednesdays • 4:00-5:00 p.m.

The JOY Singers' Choir stands for "Just Older Youth" and is for senior adults. This choir rehearses most Wednesday afternoons, 4-5 p.m. This group sets the bar in ministering through music within the community-by singing at retirement homes and assisted-living facilities. Annual mission trips and festivals provide additional ways for the choir's members to develop meaningful relationships through musical experiences.

Youth Praise Team

Students in grades 7-12 may choose to help lead youth worship on Wednesday nights by joining the Youth Praise Team. Sunday afternoon rehearsals prepare this group to be both the instrumentalists and vocalists used in Youth worship. Youth ensembles, instrumental groups, a choir, and even soloists are often pulled together to share on Oakmont's annual Youth Sunday.

Preschool and Children's Choirs

Wednesdays (September through April) • 6:00-6:45 p.m.

We have graded choirs for various age groups of preschoolers and children. Our children's choirs have opportunities to lead in worship services at various times throughout the year, usually present a musical in the spring, and participate in ministry and fun events, as well.

Vocal Ensembles

Ever since 1994, Oakmont has had two vocal ensembles leading in worship. These groups generally sing on a monthly basis during the school year and will often present a Christmas concert. Invitations to sing have taken these groups to the Biltmore House, the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh, Williamsburg, and the White House.

Joyful Sounds

Rehearsals:  Sunday Afternoons

An all ladies group of 8-14 singers.

Highest Praise

Rehearsals: Sunday Afternoons

A mixed men & women’s group of 12-16 singers.

Testify

Rehearsals: scheduled when a presentation is upcoming

Men's group of approximately 8 singers.

Instrumental Groups

Orchestra

Rehearsals: Wednesdays • 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Oakmont continues to be one of the few churches in Greenville that utilizes an orchestra on most Sundays of the year. Open to adults (and high school students by audition), the Orchestra helps lead worship at our 9:40 a.m. Worship Service. This group is a vital component of our Sunday morning worship-playing preludes, postludes, offertories, and accompanying anthems.

JuBellation Ringers Handbells

Rehearsals: scheduled when a presentation is upcoming

Oakmont’s adult handbell group comes together as needed for special events and specific seasons of the church year. There are certain times of the year when this bell group is heard from more often than others, especially at Christmas, Lent, and at Easter.
