26/4: Sabbath as an Answer to Work/Life Balance

September 11 – November 20, 2019

Wednesdays  •  6:15 - 7:15 p.m.  •  Multi-Purpose Room

Leaders: Greg Rogers and Joshua Breazeale

How do we find rest and work/life balance in a 24/7 world? Just as the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, so our technological tools allow 24-hour productivity and connectivity, give us more control, and subtlety enslave us to busyness itself.  Setting aside a day of rest helps us reconnect with our Creator and find God’s peace for our lives. The Sabbath is about letting go of the controls one day a week and letting God be God.  Practicing Sabbath is God’s answer to the work/life challenges that we all face.

The 11 week study will include a brief, weekly video from Matthew Sleeth’s 24:6 video series, along with weekly readings from Wayne Muller’s Sabbath.   Each session will begin with a large group time to view the video, followed by small group conversation and learnings from the video and weekly readings.

Dr. Matthew Sleeth, M.D., in his video series 24/6, describes our symptoms, clarifies the signs, diagnoses the illness, and lays out a simple plan for living a healthier, more God-centered life in a digitally-dazed, always-on world. Sleeth shares how his own family was dramatically transformed when it adopted Sabbath practices.  He helps us through these videos to understand how our own lives can be transformed – physically, emotionally, relationally and spiritually – by adopting the 24/6 lifestyle.

Wayne Muller, an ordained minister and therapist in his book Sabbath, demonstrates how we can create a special time of rest and renewal — a refuge for our souls — amidst the demands of caring for children or aging parents, an overwhelming work schedule, weekly household duties, and our church, community, and civic engagements.  The book chapters close with Sabbath practices with which we can experiment to achieve that work/life balance we so desperately seek and need.
