Beth's Letter to the Church...
January 2, 2018
Dear Oakmont Baptist Church,
The Oakmont Baptist Church family has been my family for almost 24 years. It has been one of my greatest joys to share life with this congregation. You have given me a place to raise a family, grow in my own faith and spiritual practices, and allowed me to use the spiritual gifts for ministry that God has given me. We have shared both joy and laughter, and devastating loss and sadness. Through it all we have ministered to one another and you have loved Tommy and me. I have been blessed beyond measure by being part of this church family.
We all know that life is constantly changing, sometimes in surprising ways. After much prayer and conversation with Tommy, I have decided it is time to move in a new direction in my life. It is with excitement, and honestly a little fear, that I have decided to retire from vocational ministry. My last day here as part of the Oakmont church ministerial staff will be Sunday, February 18. I don’t have any immediate plans other than to relax, travel, and see what the Lord has in store for us in the next phase of our lives. In the movie, “You’ve Got Mail” a longtime co-worker tells the bookstore owner when she decides to close her shop, “You are daring to imagine you can have a different life.” That is what I am doing. I am daring to imagine that God can use me in a new way in this next chapter of my life. Right now, I have no idea what that might be. There is nothing holding us to any particular place or plan. It is hard for me to imagine not having a plan, but it is exciting to know Tommy and I have the opportunity to be wide open to any and all possibilities. We are going to dare to imagine that our lives can be something different and then watch and see how that evolves in God’s time.
I cannot thank Oakmont and all of you enough for all that you have given us. Thank you for sharing your lives with us and allowing us to share our lives with you as we have together sought to serve our Lord. We love you and will carry all of you with us wherever we go from here.
Blessings and love,
Beth Thompson
