About Richard Joyner
Richard Joyner is pastor of Conetoe Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.. Richard was a 2015 Top 10 CNN Hero and also preached at the CBF of NC General Assembly this year. Several years ago Richard helped develop the Conetoe Family Life Center.
Conetoe, with a population of about 300 people, is a “food desert” where fresh and nutritious food is not often available. Richard hasteamed with young people in the community to grow and harvest almost 50,000 pounds of fresh food each year. Most of the food is given to those in need in the community but the students sellsome of their food to raise funds to continue the program. Thegroup also raises bees and sells the honey to local grocery storesand restaurants. As part of an after school and summer program,the young people learn how to cook the food to help themselves and families become healthier.
“Growing food calls us to work together,” he said. “By nourishing plants, you’re nourishing community. It’s one and the same.”
